Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork that is a nurturing full body massage performed directly through the clothes. It feels deeply relaxing and energizing as it helps you release muscular and emotional tensions. Shiatsu is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the oldest medicines in the world. Chinese medicine offers a profoundly wise understanding of the causes of disease (emotions, environment and diet). It has studied the interconnections between mind and body as reflected in the meridian system for over 3000 years. Shiatsu uses the same knowledge of meridians and acupressure points as acupuncture but uses nurturing touch instead of needles.

A shiatsu practitioner uses finger pressure to stimulate acupoints and also uses the hands, fists, elbows and feet to apply pressure to larger areas of the body. Gentle assisted stretching and manipulation techniques are incorporated to relax the joints . Shiatsu works with the life force energy - called chi (or qi, ki) - encouraging it to flow more smoothly along the energy pathways, the meridians, of the body. Shiatsu stimulates the body's own healing systems and brings the body into balance, energetically and physically.
